Eureka Moment #6
I had my eureka moment this week while reading the epilogue of our text. I found it interesting how it reflects back on all that we've learned while reading the text but also looks forward and makes it a point that what we've learned can be used in the future. I have learned a lot in taking this course and I have a new outlook on the term gender and the different areas I can learn about in. Like the text says "What gender and culture will mean in the future is up to you." (pg. 317). We can all take what we have learned and grow from that and educate others or we can ignore what we have learned and let others dictate what norms are when it comes to genders and cultures. Our text has a section labeled Taking A Voice and I think it is relevant because if we can all find a way to set aside our differences then maybe we can change the future we are heading towards. I think we need to be more open minded and accepting of the genders and cultures that surround us even if we do not understand them or agree with their ways.

I to got a lot from this course and learned the same similar things. Like we need to be more open minded and change societies old forces of habits that we all encounter in today's world. If we all can open our eyes and know that if i guy where a pink shirt does not mean he is not masculine, it's because he liked the shirt. Things like this are ways we can accept the new and forget about the old. As long as we all put are differences aside and fix the problems then we can get some where. It's all up to how we do it that will shape generations in the future. This course only gave us a wider understanding of how and why there are gender differences today.
ReplyDeleteIllia - sounds like you and I had a similar epiphany this week! There is not much more I can add to what you posted, I simply agree with everything you said. At dinner on Father's day, one of my daughters said to me that it made her really happy that I took this course so serious and all of them said they noticed a change in me. Enough said.
ReplyDeleteIllia I have to agree that this has been an incredible course. What we have learned in this course is not just for the moment but knowledge that we should use to make a difference today and the future. Personally I have been encouraged to do what I can to break down those gender stereotypes and barriers in my company, family and community. For example at home; I can/do encourage my son to show emotion and feelings and teach him to respect /encourage the contributions of women to name a few. It will take all of us coming together to challenge and change the traditional gender roles. Just think if each of us shares the knowledge we learned with one person who get inspired to make a change and that person shares what they have learned from you with others slowly change can happen.
ReplyDeleteAll change begins with new perceptions...to see that you are seeing the world and relationships in a new light is so satisfying as an instructor to read....keep going....never shut your eyes to seeing that your perceptions isn't necessarily reality. Thanks for some great blogs this semester!
